The history of school – Development – School today

The “Vasa Zivkovic” Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in region and it is the oldest school in Pancevo. It was founded in the period of “military borders” and during many years, due to social and political circumstances, it changed the name several times. In the period of Austrian-Hungarian Empire it was called “Upper town school” for both male and female pupils. It was founded way back in 1794, although there is certain data that a school, which had tuition both in German and Serbian, existed in this part of military border even in a period before 1794. In 1833, 125 pupils attended the school divided in two classes, so the general command in Temisoara decided to allow the evolvement of the Serbian school. In 1874, the Serbs were allowed to have three school buildings and four teachers. The language of the tuition was changed from Serbian into German or Hungarian.

During many years of its existence the school changed its name several times and from 1953. it was named after Dositej Obradovic. In 1971 it changes the name for the last time and it is known as “Vasa Zivkovic” Elementary School. It was named after a prominent Pancevo’s archpriest and poet Vasa Zivkovic.

School provides books and school material for poor children and enables them to go to excursions for free.
Following the important social segments we have joined the project “Schools without violence” in organization of UNESCO.
The school celebrates the Patron Saint’s Day on January 27th, respecting the tradition of our nation and the holy role of our saint St. Sava. The light of his deeds obliges us to follow the true and good path. We are obliged to follow that path in order to respect the name of another Serbian luminary and that is the name that our school proudly carries. Every year, on May 23rd we celebrate the School day, it is the best possible time to show all the best things which have been achieved during the school year. School organizes a program during which: the best students are awarded, the best student of generation is chosen, the holders of Vuk’s Diploma are awarded, and the teachers who had a significant role in the achievements of their students are awarded as well.
